Caribous beat Flyers 5-3
news • 2016-01-24 The Kelly Ford Gander Flyers lost 5-3 to the Clarenville Caribous on Sunday afternoon. The Caribous used special team play to defeat the Flyers scoring 1 power play goal, 1 short handed goal an empty net goal and held the flyers scoreless on 8 power play opportunities. The loss will mean that the Flyers will faceoff against the Grand Falls Windsor Cataracts in the first round of the CWSHL playoffs.
The Caribous jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Stewart McCrae power play goal and a Brad Crann short handed tally. The Caribous out shot the Flyers 17-9 in the first and totally dominated play during the period.
The Flyers responded in the Second period out shooting the Caribous 19-10 and were finally rewarded when Andrew Ryan scored from Josh Day and Steve Brazil to make it a 2-1 game. Just over a minute later, Ryan Desrosiers restored the Caribou’s 2 goal lead.
Josh Day scored late in the Second period from Wes Welcher and Brett Shute to send the teams to the 2nd period intermission 3-2.
Desrosiers was back again at 10:51 of the Third to make it 4-2 Caribous. Like Saturday, Ray Dalton got the Flyers back within 1 when he scored from Andrew Ryan and Mitch Oake. The Flyers out shot the Caribous 15-8 in the Third but could not get the equalizer. Rodney Mahoney finished the scoring off with an empty net goal with 33 seconds left.
Andrew Ryan and Josh Day led the Flyers with a goal and an assist. While Ray Dalton continued his recent goal scoring streak, with his 11th goal in the last 10 games. During the 10 games Dalton has been held without a goal on only 2 occasions. Dalton now has 22 points on the season, 12 of which are goals.
The Flyers close out the regular season next weekend with a series against the Cataracts at the GCC on Saturday and Sunday. The Flyers are 2-3-1 against the Cataracts this year and have not played them since November 29th.
